A Beginner’s Guide To Designing Websites: From PSD to HTML Conversion

Designing a website can be a daunting task, and with so many aspects to consider, it’s easy to get lost in the weeds. That’s why we put together this guide on how to design and build a website. We cover everything from the basics of Photoshop design (PSD) to HTML conversion, and best practices for cross-browser compatibility and mobile design.

Headings

The third section of H1 at the top is where I’ll place the name of the website, its tagline or slogan, and a brief description.

Paragraphs

A paragraph is a sequence of sentences that discusses one topic and introduces it in a more detailed way. It can also serve to break up the text and give it more structure.

Lists

Lists are a very easy way to group items together. They can be nested and used to show hierarchies and relations between the items. Lists can also be numbered or bulleted and will cause a line to appear, creating a clear separation between one item and the other.

Quotes and Citations

“If you are quoting or citing someone’s work that is copyrighted, always check the website license to see if it’s OK to quote. Not all content on the internet is available for use.”

Abbreviations and Acronyms

So, you’re a novice designer and you want to know how to design a website. You have a Photoshop document, but what do you do with it? Well, while the acronym HTML stands for Hyper Text Markup Language, I’m going to provide a list of other acronyms and abbreviations that make designing websites simpler.

Tables and Figures

Tables are very useful when displaying data in a way that is easy to read. Figures can be used to provide visual aids related to the topic of your website, such as photos or illustrations.

Quotations

Quotes are a powerful way of making your message more impactful. In the same way that images and lists can help you digest information easier, quotes also work to make your content feel more meaningful.

Fonts and Text Effects

One of the most exciting aspects of designing a website is using fonts and text effects. Fonts can make a design stand out or they can be used to create a personal feel. Text effects are handy for adding a splash of color or simply making a design look more fun and interesting. Nowadays, there are many fonts available online that you can use for free if you don’t want to use those from your computer’s default font library.

Headers

Headers are typically the first elements on a page. They are used to attract attention, show the reader what the site is about, and provide context for the page they visit.

Margins, Spacing, and Alignment (Width)

The margin is what separates one section of content from another. To determine the margins, look at the document and think about where you want the text to be separated. A common margin size is 1.5 cm or half an inch which will typically work for body copy.

The space between two lines of text can be adjusted by using either carriage returns or line breaks, which are both options when designing in Photoshop. And spacing refers to the amount of space that appears before or after a piece of text. A simple rule for spacing would be to give at least 2 pts on each end – sometimes
