Web Design Company in Chennai

Web design is what decides whether a Chennai business gets the call or gets scrolled past. DataShaft builds sites that load in under a second and are built to turn visitors into enquiries — fast, measured, and yours completely, with code, hosting and domain handed over on day one of launch.

We reply within 2 working hours, 10am–7pm IST

The problem

A beautiful website that nobody waits for is worthless

Most web design in this city is judged on how the homepage looks in a portfolio screenshot. Nobody measures what happens after it goes live.

The typical Chennai agency site — and most of the sites they build — takes three seconds or more to load, ships a megabyte of unused JavaScript, and runs a homepage carousel that pushes the phone number below the fold. On a mobile connection in Adyar at 6pm, that visitor is gone before your logo renders.

Design is not decoration. It is the difference between someone calling you and someone going back to the search results.

What actually gets you there

No page-builder JavaScript loaded on pages that don't need it. Images served as WebP/AVIF, sized for the container, lazy-loaded below the fold. Fonts subset and preloaded instead of blocking render. Critical CSS inlined, everything else deferred. One H1, a clean DOM, no framework shipped for what plain HTML and CSS can do. None of this is exotic — it's mostly things a page builder or heavy theme makes structurally hard to do, not things competitors don't know about.

Scope

What does every DataShaft website include?

Custom design, a mobile-first build, technical SEO from day one, working enquiry paths, an editable CMS, an accessibility pass, configured analytics and full ownership on handover — eight things included as standard, not sold back to you as upsells once the project is already underway.

Before you brief anyone

Custom design, template or page builder?

A page builder is cheapest and fastest but locks you to the platform. A bought template sits in the middle. Custom design costs more upfront but loads under 1.5 seconds, looks unique, and you own the code outright — the right choice once your site is a real sales channel, not a formality. See exactly where each trades off below.

If your budget is genuinely under ₹40,000, a well-chosen template configured properly will serve you better than a rushed custom build — we'll tell you that rather than force a build you can't afford. See "when we're the wrong choice" below.

Process

Six weeks, and you see it every week

No four-week silence followed by a big reveal you're expected to love.

Week 1

Discovery

Who buys from you, what they need to see, and what your current site gets wrong. We audit the existing one first if there is one.

Week 2

Structure & wireframes

Page architecture and content plan before any visual design. Getting this wrong is what causes rewrites.

Week 3

Visual design

Homepage and two key templates, designed on mobile first. You approve before build starts.

Week 4–5

Build

Live staging link from day one of this phase. Check it whenever you like.

Week 6

Test, launch, hand over

Speed and accessibility testing, real-device checks, go live, training, full handover.

Case study

Same business, same traffic, different site

A Chennai professional services firm was getting reasonable traffic and almost no calls. The site took nine seconds on mobile, the phone number sat below three carousel slides, and the contact form asked for eleven fields including budget. We rebuilt it: no carousel, phone and WhatsApp above the fold, four-field form.

Honesty

When we're the wrong choice

We'd rather say this now than three weeks into a project.

You need it in a week

We can't do discovery, design, build and testing properly in seven days. Anyone who says they can is handing you a template.

Budget is under ₹40,000

At that level a well-chosen template configured properly serves you better than a rushed custom build. We'll tell you which one.

You want awards, not enquiries

We optimise for conversion and speed. If the goal is a portfolio showpiece, a specialist design studio is a better fit.

Before you sign with anyone

How do you tell a good web design company from a bad one?

Run their own homepage through PageSpeed Insights before you talk to them, and get source code, hosting and domain handover terms in writing before you sign — those two checks alone eliminate most bad agencies, since neither can be faked with a good portfolio. Six more checks below go further than "look at their work."

Test their own site first

Run their homepage through PageSpeed Insights before you talk to them. An agency whose own site takes four seconds to load isn't going to hand you a fast one — they'll hand you what they gave themselves.

Get handover terms in writing before you sign

Not after launch. Ask explicitly: do I get the source code, hosting login and domain in my name? A verbal "of course" that isn't in the contract is worth nothing when the relationship sours.

A fixed quote against a written scope, not an hourly estimate

"We'll bill as we go" is how a ₹60,000 project becomes ₹150,000. A real quote names the number of pages, the revisions included, and the price — before work starts.

Ask to see a live staging link mid-project, not just finished screenshots

Anyone can make a finished homepage look good in a portfolio. A company confident in its process will show you an in-progress build, not just the highlight reel.

Ask what they'd tell you NOT to do

A company willing to say "you don't need that feature" or "your budget doesn't need custom, a template will do" is being straight with you. One that agrees to everything you ask for is optimising for the sale, not the outcome.

Check if SEO basics are in the quote or a surprise upsell later

Clean headings, schema markup, a valid sitemap and mobile-first build should be part of "a website," not a ₹15,000 add-on discovered after signing.

Questions

Straight answers

How much does a website cost in Chennai?

A 6-page starter site runs ₹55,000–1,15,000. A 15-page business website with a blog and full conversion paths is ₹1,15,000–1,45,000. A redesign that protects your existing rankings runs ₹1,45,000–2,00,000. What changes the figure is page count, how much custom functionality you need, and whether content and photography already exist. Hosting and domain are separate and paid to your provider directly.

How long does a website take?

Three to four weeks for a starter site, five to seven for a business website, six to eight for a redesign with rank protection. You get a fixed timeline in the quote and a live staging link from week four, so you're watching it happen rather than waiting for an email.

Will I be able to update it myself?

Yes. Every site ships on a CMS your team can use, with two recorded training sessions covering the things you'll actually do — editing text, swapping images, adding a blog post or a service page. If you'd rather not touch it, we offer a maintenance plan, but you're never forced into one to make a text change.

What if I already have a website?

We start with a technical audit — speed, mobile usability, indexation, and what's currently ranking. That last part matters most: a redesign done carelessly loses the rankings you already have. We map every existing URL to its new destination and apply 301 redirects before launch, so the equity carries across.

Do you write the content?

We'll structure it and write the page framework — headings, section flow, calls to action. Full copywriting is a separate service and we'll quote it if you need it. Photography we don't do in-house, but we specify exactly what's needed and can introduce Chennai photographers we work with.

Do you work with businesses outside Chennai?

Yes. Most of our clients are in Chennai because we can meet in person, which genuinely helps during discovery. But we build for businesses across India and overseas, and the process runs identically over video calls and a shared staging link.
